General

Right from the biblical times, cumin has been popular as an efficient digestive and a food flavour for ceremonial feasting.Originally a native of the Mediterranean region, cumin is widely cultivated today in many parts of the world. Cumin is a small herbaceous plant, cultivated for its dried fruits. Atmaturity the seeds are approximately 6 mm long, oval shaped, with pale green to yellow brown colour. When the leaves with the seeds turn brown, the dried plant are collected, threshed, and the seeds are separated by winnowing.

Flavour

Cumin has an intensely strong and slightly bitter flavour.

Usage

Cumin is used world wide in foods, beverages, liquors, medicine, toiletries and perfumery. Cumin is used to correct broken, dilated, split capillaries. Cumin also improves complexion.

Geographical

Mild, equable climate with rich, well drained, sandy, loamy soil and sunny, conducive environment provide the perfect requirements for the abundant growth of cumin.

Producing regions

In the production of cumin too, India holds a major position in the world.Rajasthan and Gujarath are the major cumin producing states in India.

Grades

Cumin is exported in its natural aswell as powdered form. It is also exported as essential oils.

Exports are mostly to USA, Singapore, Japan, UK and North America.
